HAND FEEDING INSTRUCTIONS

ABOUT THE HUMMINGBIRD RING

Deceptively simple, the Hummingbird Ring offers an easy way to attract hummingbirds right to your hand. This one-size-fits-most ring is good for all ages, and can be used with clips, trainers, and other supports for a variety of arrangements to suit all hummingbird feeding choices. Made in the USA, this ring is easy to clean, easy to use, and easy to help you fall in love with hummingbirds all over again.

NECTAR OPTIONS

The Hummingbird Ring holds one teaspoon (5 ml) of nectar, and can be used with homemade nectar or premade mixes. If making your own nectar, use a 1:4 ratio of plain white table sugar to water (one-quarter cup of sugar to every cup of water). Do not use honey, molasses, fruit juices, or sugar substitutes, as they will not provide the right nutrition for hummingbirds and can even harbor mold or bacteria that could hurt the birds. Warm or boil the water first to help the sugar dissolve more quickly, and store excess nectar in the refrigerator for up to a week before use.

There is no need to add any food coloring or dye to the nectar; the bright color of the Hummingbird Ring will attract the birds. Extra dyes are unnecessary and could be dangerous for birds.

RING FILLING AND ASSEMBLY

Your Hummingbird Ring comes in two pieces, the reservoir base and the colorful petals. The ring can be opened to refill, or use a plastic syringe (included with the Starter Kit or available for separate purchase) to fill the ring through the feeding port in the center of the petals without disassembly. You can also use an eyedropper to refill the ring. Be careful not to overfill the reservoir, which could cause leakage.

To replace the petals, snap them back onto the ring with a loud, firm click. If the ring is properly assembled, the nectar will not leak even if the ring is tipped or upside down.

USING YOUR HUMMINGBIRD RING

To get hummingbirds used to your ring, first use the trainer (included with the Starter Kit or available for separate purchase) or balance the ring in a shot glass or small flowerpot. Hummingbirds are naturally curious and will investigate the brightly colored ring and quickly discover its sweet nectar. If you have other nectar feeders, position the ring near them to attract attention, and consider removing extra feeders after a day or two to encourage hummingbirds to try the ring.

To keep insects away, wipe the ring off after refilling to be sure there is no exposed nectar to attract ants or bees. Use a shallow dish such as a pie plate or plant saucer filled with water and place the trainer, shot glass, or pot in the middle of the water to prevent ants from approaching. Do not, however, use insecticides, oil-based, or petroleum products near the feeder to discourage insects, as these products can hurt hummingbirds.

Ideally, first position the ring near where you hope to hand-feed hummingbirds, such as on a patio table or deck railing near a seating area. Sit quietly nearby and watch the birds, but stay out of reach until hummingbirds easily visit the ring. Gradually move your seat closer, but avoid sudden movements or noise that may scare the birds. Wearing red, pink, or bright floral patterns may help make you even more interesting to hungry hummingbirds so they will be willing to approach more closely.

When you are ready to wear the Hummingbird Ring, brace your hand and arm to avoid weariness or shaking. Stay as still and quiet as possible, and the birds will soon come right to the ring for a sip. Hummingbirds may hover while feeding, or could land on the petals to rest as they drink.

Above all, be patient. Hummingbirds are curious and bold, but they may still be hesitant to come close right away. In time, however, the birds will get used to your presence and won’t be able to resist.

CLIP AND TRAINER USE

The trainer holds up to three Hummingbird Rings at once and comes with a suction cup to attach to a window for close, fun views of hummingbirds. The trainer is also sized to fit inside a coffee mug, wine glass, small flowerpot, pint glass, or similar container and can be positioned anywhere you hope to feed hummingbirds. Using the trainer can get hummingbirds accustomed to feeding from the rings before you’re ready to bring the birds to your hand.

For more personal interaction with hummingbirds, the clips (included with the Starter Kit) can be slipped into each ring and attached to a hat brim, pocket, or the edge of most glasses or sunglasses. When hummingbirds visit rings attached to the clips, not only will you get a great view, but you can even hear the tiny humming of their wings and feel the breezes their flapping generates.

CLEANING AND CARE

The Hummingbird Ring is top rack dishwasher safe, and easy to clean with a gentle bleach solution or mild dish soap. The ring should be thoroughly cleaned before every refill, and the syringe, trainer, and clips should also be rinsed and cleaned. Allow all parts to dry before assembly and refilling, and store the ring empty and clean between uses. Good cleaning practices will keep your Hummingbird Ring in top condition for many seasons of hand-feeding hummingbirds, and will protect the birds from bacteria, mold, or fungus.

As you use your Hummingbird Ring, you’ll learn more and more about your hummingbird guests and their hearty appetites, and the more special visits you’ll enjoy. Have fun!
